Vehicles are forced to move slowly in the Barobazer area of Kaliganj upazila on the Jhenidah-Jashore route.

The road condition has turned particularly bad due to continuous rainfall since Monday.

BM Qammruzzaman, an activist of Nirapad Sarak Chai (Nischa), a platform for safe roads at Kaliganj, has said that roads are being damaged rapidly because poor-quality construction materials were being used.

A number of drivers of transport vehicles said a road near the Barobazer petrol pump was damaged badly a few months back due to the poor quality of construction materials. It worsened after the rainfall. Driver Mantu Mia, running a bus of Gorai Paribahan on the Kushtia-Khulna, said potholes were created on the road. Drivers have to be extremely cautious on this stretch.

For safety, drivers are taking a detour of an extra 10km via the Kaliganj-Khajuara road. This has increased the travel time, Mantu said.Raman Biswas, a government employee travelling on the road for service purposes, said he has to leave home early to reach office in time five days a week.

Qammruzzaman said heavy goods vehicles were also to blame for damaging roads.

Anwarul Azim Anar, lawmaker of Jhenidah-4 constituency, said tenders for repairing the road were floated a few weeks back. The work is expected to start soon, he added.
