BU, Russel end first-leg on winning note

Brothers Union and Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra completed the first leg of the Bangladesh Premier League with winning note defeating their respective opponents yesterday at different venues across the country.

Brothers Union defeated Arambagh by a solitary goal while Sheikh Russel also won by same margin against Team BJMC. Held at the Rafiquddin Bhuiyan Stadium in Mymensingh, Everton De Souza scored the all important goal for Brothers.

After a long 75 minutes goalless, when the match was seemingly progressing to a drawn encounter. The Brazilian playmaker Everton powered his right footer on 77th minute to bring valuable points for the Gopibagh outfit.

It was very much essential for Brothers to win the match when they were the second bottom side in the points table with five points and lift the position to 11 by virtue of obtaining full three points.

Brothers, before this match could win only one match when they defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club and managed two draws to earn five points, now out of their 12 matches, they won two, drew as many matches to make the first leg tally eight points.

Arambagh Krira Sangha, who have impressive performances at the early stage but could not continue the momentum after winning two successive matches against Saif Sporting Club and Chittagong Abahani, suffered defeat in the next two matches.

However, after very uneven results the giant killers Arambagh concluded the first leg on fifth position with six wins, one draw and suffered five defeats out of 12 games.

The other match held at the Shaheed Bulu Stadium in Noakhali, Alex Raphaelm De Silva salvaged Sheikh Russel Kria Chakra with a 42nd minute strike.

Russel, one of the title contenders and still on the race, after winning the match finished first phase on third place with collecting 27 points, seven points behind the second positioned Abahani Limited. Russel won eight matches, drew three and suffered a defeat.

Meanwhile, the first leg of the Bangladesh Premier League was completed yesterday with the newcomers in the league Bashundhara Kings are on top of the points table with 34 points followed by the reigning champions Abahani Limited 31 points and Russel earned 27 points. On the other hand,  Team BJMC and Mohammedan Sporting Club are in danger zone with four and six points respectively.
