95 curves on 20 km of road in Tangail

At least 95 curves on a 20 km stretch from Porabari to Garobazar on a zonal highway have become virtual death traps. Most of the curves are devoid of any sign posts, making accidents a common phenomenon.

The curves are more acute at Ghonerdewli, Angerkhola, Choithot, Rasulpur, Mominpur, Sonkhola, and Manikpur intersections.  Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) sources say the 20-km-long road was constructed with financial help from the World Bank and the International Development Association at a cost of Tk 24 crore, the Second Rural Transport Improvement Project (RTIP).

 The construction of the road had started in July 2015 and it was opened to traffic in December 2016. Since then, accidents have become a common feature on this road.

 The zonal highway is important, as it links Ghatail, Tangail, Madhupur, Sakhipur, Mirzapur, Bhaluka of Mymensingh.

 Drivers say they are unable to drive normally because of the 95 or so curves on the road. So many bends also increases the travel time on this 20 km stretch. Any attempt to drive fast, results in accidents.

Sihab Uddin, a motorcycle rider, said sign posts indicating curves ahead have not been put up by the department of LGED of roads and highways. Local people call the road a ‘death trap’, as frequent accidents claims lives.  Many of the accident victims are left crippled, says Anisur Rahman Hira, secretary of the Truck and Covered Van Drivers’ Association.

 Police sources say Jamal Uddin, a trader, was killed in a collision between two autos at Manikpur intersection on September 29. One Ashraf Ali was killed in an accident on August 13 on the curve at the Sonkhola intersection. One Kamal Mia was killed and 5 others were injured in a collision between a truck and an auto at the Garobazar curve on August 5. School teacher Sajjad Rahman said that the LGED had ignored the curves at the time of road construction. Driving would become easy if the road was reconstructed by avoiding the curves.

 Sub-assistant engineer of Ghatail Upazila LGED Md. Ashraf Ali said, “There was no allocation for land acquisition. The length of the road would be reduced if it is constructed straight avoiding curves. Finding no other alternative, the road had to be build with the curves. The road signs will be put up soon.”
