Shela crowned Miss Universe Bangladesh

Shirin Akter Shela, a student of Dhaka University’s physics department, has been crowned the first ever Miss Universe Bangladesh. The name of the winner of Miss Universe Bangladesh 2019 was announced by the judges at the grand finale held at the capital’s International Convention City Bashundhara on Wednesday evening. Alisha Islam became the first runner up of the competition, while the second runner-up is Jessia Islam.

Shela was crowned by celebrated Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen, who won the title of Miss Universe in 1994. Susmita Sen said in her speech, “I am super excited to join this event. It is a momentous occasion because we are making history by sending the first ever representative of Bangladesh to Miss Universe. My heartiest congratulations to the winner and all the participants. This is your moment of glory, seize it.”

The panel of judges for grand finale includes Sushmita Sen, singer-actor Tahsan Khan, Persona’s Managing Director Kaniz Almas, President of Bangladesh Heritage Craft Tootli Rahman, Founder of Pulse Health Care Rubaba Dowla, Managing Director of Green Delta Insurance Farzanah Chowdhury, Managing Director of Flora Bank Rafiul Islam and commentator and former cricketer Athar Ali Khan, among others.

Representing Bangladesh, Shila will now compete with 130 participating countries at the upcoming ‘63rd Miss Universe’ in the USA this December. ‘Miss Universe Bangladesh’, the franchise of Miss Universe, is a consortium between RIZ events, Off Track & Trilogy. Rizwan Bin Farouq is the chairman of Miss Universe Bangladesh while Sohel A Chaklader Duke, Shafik Islam and Mithun Zaman are the directors.
