Nipah virus: IEDCR warns against drinking raw date juice

The disease control authorities have warned the people against drinking raw date juice, to prevent contacting deadly Nipah virus, which normally spreads in the country in the winter season.

The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) issued the warning in a press release on Thursday, which was sent to the media yesterday.

The disease control watchdog also urged the media not to publish any news that encourages drinking raw date juice as people may get infected by Nipah, said the release.

Nipah virus spreads via unfiltered date juice and partly eaten fruits, which have been contaminated by bats.

The IEDCR release signed by its Director Dr Meerjadi Sabrina Flora highlighted the worrying situation which occurred after some news stories in electronic and print media indirectly encouraged people to drink raw date sap. IEDCR also urged social and cultural organisations to abstain from organising any programs and festivals surrounding raw date juice.

No vaccine has been discovered for Nipah virus yet. Bat is the main carrier of the deadly virus and a person can contract it from both people and animals.
