The fate of Mustafizur Rahman was already decided even as the Bangladesh team management worked on finalising the Test squad for the one-off Test against Zimbabwe at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

At a pre-match press conference yesterday, national team head coach Russell Domingo said the left-arm pacer would not be included in the playing eleven against Zimbabwe. Russell said he did not feel that Mustafizur was ready for Tests yet because the fast bowler needed to work on some technical aspects of bowling against right-handed batsmen.

The head coach also said that Mustafizur would work with the new fast-bowling coach, Ottis Gibson, and try to get back fully in shape. He added that the bowler would be allowed to play both red- and white-ball cricket only after significant improvement in some technical aspects. “I know there has been a bit of miscommunication regarding the Mustafiz situation. I don’t think he is ready for Tests. He needs to work on his bowling to learn how to swing the ball back into the right-hander,” said Russell.

“Getting him back into the squad is the first step towards spending some time with our new bowling coach. He was put back into the squad not to play, but to train and get some shape back. He will establish a connection with Ottis and develop a bit of trust and relationship. He will stay with the team,” Russell told the media. “Mustafiz will not be playing in this Test match. He is going to be bowling every day. I have told him to get some shape back as that would benefit him in Tests and white-ball cricket,” he added.

Mustafizur was also not in the Test squad against Pakistan. At that time, he was playing in the Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), where he got seven wickets for Walton Central Zone with the best figures of 4-68.
