The essential cover up guide

As pleasant weather slowly starts to kick back in, coats and jackets invariably take centre stage. They are versatile layering items integral to the wardrobe of every man who enjoys playing around with different looks, while moving away from all things predictable.

What's more? There is a jacket for every reason and occasion. From daily workwear and club wear to casual Sunday outings and more formal, festive gatherings, you're sure to find a style to layer on your basic pieces.

Layering the style

"The best part about jackets is the fact that they can instantly make a casual look appear formal. They have the ability to smoothly transform an outfit, making it event-appropriate," says designer Nikhil Thampi. What are the things you must keep in mind when investing in a jacket for yourself? That would definitely be the fabric, cut, shoulders and the versatility of the jacket. "Menswear is seeing a very interesting phase at the moment where men aren't afraid to experiment with cuts and styles. We get to see a variety of lengths from a short crop jacket to a sporty bomber jacket to a relaxed robe jacket or my personal favourite - light trench jackets. These are all slowly becoming a staple in men's' wardrobes," says Thampi.

For the festivities

For the upcoming festive season, designer Anushree Reddy suggests picking up easy-to-wear pieces that can work together effortlessly as separates for every occasion. "Indian festivities call for rich fabrics and textures. Use soft luxurious fabrics like pure, hand woven ahimsa silk, dreamy organza and pure organic mulmul along with amazing texturing," says Reddy. Collarless jackets with embellished sleeves and double-breasted velvet numbers are in vogue.

Style notes

1. Learn to play with lengths. Floor length, relaxed, oversized robe jackets give one a comfortable, cosy vibe.
2. Try wearing short crop jackets with a longer shirt to give it a boho look.
3. For a European vibe, pick shades like peach or pink and work them with burnt orange, ink blue, magenta, ivory and gold.
4. For festivities, accessorise with brooches, lapel pins, pocket squares, scarves, etc.
5. A tailored trench jacket can be your best travel companion and be dressed up with formal separates or dressed down with casual ripped jeans and a basic T-shirt.
6. Colour-blocked jackets help you add that extra quirk.
