BNP plans showdown

The BNP wants to organise at least two shows of strength in the next two weeks to rejuvenate the party's rank and file, ahead of the next general election likely to be held later next year.

The party’s standing committee, the highest policymaking body, at a meeting on Monday decided to stage a major show of strength while observing “National Revolution and Solidarity Day” by holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on November 7, according to party sources,

The BNP, one of the major political parties, is also making preparations to hold another show of strength at different places from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar during party chairperson Khaleda Zia’s planned visit to the Kutupalong Rohingya camp by road next week, said the sources.

The decisions came a week after Khaleda Zia was given a massive reception in front of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on her arrival from London after three months.

There is a tentative plan of the chairperson, who underwent treatment in London, to start her journey to Cox’s Bazar on Saturday. She would reach the Kutupalong Rohingya camp the following day, the sources added.

District leaders are preparing to organise shows of strength at different places from Jatrabari to the Kutupalong Rohingya camp to greet the party chief on her way to Cox’s Bazar through Narayanganj, Munsiganj, Comilla, Feni and Chittagong districts, said the sources.

Some senior leaders, however, said that being a major political party, the BNP does not need to organise shows of strength as it has massive public support.

Like other years, there will be a huge gathering on National Revolution and Solidarity Day, and party leaders and activists would gather along the way of the chairperson’s planned visit to Cox’s Bazar, they added.

Standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said they want to hold a public meeting at Suhrawardy Udyan to mark National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

He termed Khaleda’s visit to Cox’s Bazar to see the state of the Rohingya refugees as a humanitarian issue. There is no politics involved, he said.

The veteran leader, however, said party leaders and activists might greet their leader on her way to Cox’s Bazar at different places. Narayanganj district BNP president Toimur Alam Khandaker said they have had a meeting to make preparations to greet Khaleda Zia on her way to Cox’s Bazar. “We will ensure a huge gathering on the roadside during her crossing of Narayanganj district,” he added.

BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office sources said Khaleda would start her four-day journey to Cox’s Bazar from her Gulshan residence at 10:00am on Saturday.

The chairperson will make her night hold in Chittagong on Saturday then she will go to Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday.  She will make her nigh hold on Sunday in tourist city of Cox’s Bazar. She will depart the town on Monday night and expected to reach Dhaka on Monday morning,” said the sources.
