Host troupe stages ‘Mahatma’ at Shilpakala today

As a part of the ongoing weeklong theatre festival ‘Itihaser Mohanayokera’ organised by Universal Theatre, a much-acclaimed play titled ‘Mahatma’ to be staged by the host troupe today at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Segun Bagicha in the capital.

The drama, written by Mazharul Haque Pintu, will focus on the communal riot which had begun in Noakhali in 1946.

To destroy the communal harmony of the Indian Subcontinent, the British conspired to “divide and rule”, to be specific to wage a conflict between Hindu and Muslim. In that riot, opportunists and religious extremists burned village after village, and massive loot, killing, kidnapping and persecution of women took place.

After a series of events, the play ends with an optimistic proposal of Gandhi.

The different characters in the play have been enacted by Abul Kalam Azad (Mahatma Gandhi), Shawkat Ali Monsur Riyad (Edward Prince), Mazharul Haque Pintu (Khelaram Pandey), Abdur Rzzak Anjan (Golam Sarwar) and others.

The festival ‘Itihaser Mohanayokera’ sheds light on the life and works of Kobi Guru Rabindranath Tagore, Baul Samrat Lalon, Surya Sen, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Mahatma Gandhi, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Gautam Buddha by staging different plays related to them.

The participating troupes are—Palakar from Dhaka, Chittagong District Shilpakala Academy Repertory, Loko Natyadal, Aranyank, host troupe Universal Theatre and Kalyani Natya Bhabna from West Bengal, India. The play is being staged everyday at 7pm at the National Theatre Hall of BSA, until November 10.
