Nahid credits diplomacy for Bangladesh’s success

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid has credited the effective diplomacy of Bangladesh for its successes in the UNESCO, reports BSS.

“Bangladesh has been elected as a member of UNESCO Executive Board for the third time with the votes of UNESCO member states for the country’s successful diplomacy,” he told the Education Ministry officials yesterday at a briefing at the VIP lounge of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on his arrival here after attending the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference in Paris.

Earlier, Technical and Madrasah Division Secretary of the Education Ministry Md Alamgir, Higher Education Division Additional Secretaries Dr Aruna Bishwash and Mahiuddin Khan and senior officials of the ministry welcomed the minister at the airport, said an official release here. Bangladesh will serve the organization as the executive board member for the 2017-2021term, Nahid said, adding that the country bagged 144 votes out of 184 in the election.

He said this year’s UNESCO conference was very important and a glaring example of success for Bangladesh as the historic 7th March speech of the Father of the Nation has been included in the Memory of the World International Register of the UNESCO as a world documentary heritage.

The country’s reputation has increased in the international arena through the conference, the minister said, adding Bangladesh has been elected Vice-President for the next conference of the organization.

The education minister said the successes have come following the appropriate and foresighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and cordial efforts of all.

He urged all concerned to work sincerely to keep up the reputation of the country.

According to the release, Nahid hosted a lunch in the honor of E-9 countries’ ministers on November 1 in Paris and all education ministers of the E-9 countries joined the event.

E-9 countries lauded different initiatives of Bangladesh, the release said.

A high-level delegation led by Nahid left Dhaka for Paris on October 29 to join the 39th session of the UNESCO General Conference there.

Other delegation members were Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Sohorab Hossain, Additional Secretary Chowdhury Mufad Ahmed and Secretary of the Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU)  Monjur Hossain.
