BNP eyes 1 lakh people at rally

The BNP plans to gather over one lakh people in and around Suhrawardy Udyan at its mega rally this afternoon. Though the party is organizing the rally to mark the National Revolution and Solidarity Day, the event will ultimately turn into a pre-election showdown and campaign, said party insiders.

Party chairperson Khaleda Zia, who will address the gathering as the chief guest, is likely to urge the government to resolve the current political impasse through talks and hold the next elections under a neutral administration, said insiders.

The party has made all-out preparations to stage another big show of strength through the rally, which will begin at 2 pm. The BNP has already staged two shows of strength in recent times—first, after the arrival of Khaleda Zia from London on October 18, and second, during her trip to Cox’s Bazar to visit the Rohingyas on October 28–31.

Party leaders expect Suhrawardy Udyan rally to turn into a sea of humans with the presence of a huge number of party leaders, activists, and supporters from the city and nearby districts, including Narsingdi, Gazipur, and Narayanganj.

The BNP will hold an outdoor public meeting in the city after about two years. Its last public meeting was held in front of the party central office on January 5 last year to mark the anniversary of the January 5, 2014, polls. Khaleda also took part in a Pohela Boishakh function in front of the party office on April 14 in the same year.

The police have given permission to BNP to hold the rally, but on 23 conditions, said a BNP leader who refused to be named. The conditions include not using loudspeakers outside the venue, a 5-pm deadline for the rally to end, a bar on big processions proceeding towards the rally, and a bar on blocking the major roads of the city, he said. The police have taken tight security measures to maintain law and order during the rally, police sources said.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said at a press briefing that they have asked the party leaders and activists to remain alert and show the highest possible patience even in the face of extreme provocation. Regarding the police clearance to the BNP, he said the cops had “no alternative” but to grant permission.

Democratic norms should be restored and a congenial atmosphere should be created to fulfil the desire and aspirations of the people, he said. He added that they have received a permission letter from the police on 23 conditions. Replying to a question, he said the BNP is working to restore the democratic process in the country and Khaleda would pass on the message at the rally. He also sought the cooperation of the law enforcers to hold the rally peacefully. On Friday, a BNP delegation led by vice-chairman Abdullah Al Noman visited the venue and fixed the place for the podium.
