Drive to be conducted to force factories to set up ETPs: Taskforce

The Department of Environment was asked to conduct drive to force the factories on the banks of rivers surrounding Dhaka to set up effluent treatment plant (ETP) to treat their waste before disposal.

The directive was given at the 36th meeting of National Taskforce to Protect Rivers surrounding Dhaka held at the Shipping Ministry on Wednesday with Shipping Minister Shahajahan Khan in the chair.

The taskforce meeting said as many of the factories and industries on the river banks have not yet set up ETPs the waste of the factories have been continuously polluting the rivers .

Fifty percent of the 9,477 demarcation pillars on the four rivers surrounding Dhaka-- Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Balu and Turag --were installed on wrong positions and those would be reinstalled on right positions, said the minister while talking to reporters.

Some 20 kilometres walkways on the banks of rivers surrounding Dhaka -Buriganga, Turag, Sitalakkhya and Balu- have been constructed so far. 50 kilometres more walkways will be constructed soon, said the minister.

The encroachment of the rivers surrounding Dhaka will be completely stopped once construction of a total of 280 kilometres of walkways is completed, he said.

Two cannels in Dhaka city-- Ramchadrapu and Kallayanpur-- were reclaimed so far and 11 more cannels will be reclaimed soon.

Dhaka Deputy Commissioner was asked to take steps to shift madrashas, mazars and mosques which were built on the encroached river banks. District-level River Protection Committees were asked to be more active for stopping encroachment and pollution of the rivers in their respective areas.

Water Resources Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud,  Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sherif, Parliamentary Committee on the Shipping Ministry Chairman major general (retd) Rafiqul Islam, senior officers concerned, were, among others present. unb
