Govt doing politics with Rohingya issue : BNP

Opposing the government’s plan to rehabilitate Rohingyas at Noakhali’s Bhasan Char, BNP senior leader Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain on Saturday alleged that it is trying to do politics using the Rohingyas.

“The government is saying it has signed a deal (instrument) with Myanmar to repatriate the Rohingyas. But they (govt) are also taking a project to rehabilitate Rohingyas at Noakhali’s Bhasan Char.

The country’s people can understand it easily that you are deceiving them as well as the Rohingyas. Why are you doing it?” he said.

Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “We think the government is trying to do politics using the Rohingyas. They’re not opting for a permanent solution to the problem only to gain their political interests. Neither the government here nor the Myanmar one is sincere to resolve the Rohingya problem.”

Ganotantrik Sangskritik Jote organised the programme on Rohingya issue at the Jatiya Press Club.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) approved the Tk 2,312 crore Ashrayan-3 project in Noakhali's Bhashanchar for rehabilitating the Rohingya refugees.

Mosharraf, a BNP standing committee member, said Rohingyas must be sent back to their motherland with dignity and citizenship rights to resolve the problem permanently. “Proper steps will have to be taken so that Rohingyas can be ensured that they won’t face persecution and genocide returning to Myanmar.”

He said the government is yet to clearly make public the instrument it signed with Myanmar for the repatriation of Rohingyas. “We think such a deal won’t be effective to have a durable solution to the problem.”

The BNP leader said the government’s close friends are not with it to help resolve the Rohingya issue due to its diplomatic failures.unb.
