Digital World expects to draw around half million visitors

Around half a million visitors are expected to visit the four-day Digital World 2017, the country’s largest annual ICT expo, which opens at the Banganandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital today, says Razib Ahmed, president of the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB).

Sophia, a humanoid robot that generated quite a buzz among young people and the artificial intelligence industry around the world, arrived in Dhaka yesterday to participate in Digital World 2017.

ICT Division public relations officer Abu Nasher said that Sophia will participate today in a programme titled ‘Tech-Talk with Sophia’ at the Banganandhu International Conference Centre (BICC). “Digital world is a platform where numerous local and regional leaders and IT experts will share their experiences,” he added.

e-CAB is going to participate in the expo as in-charge of the e-Commerce Zone.

“We're happy that our members will be able to showcase their products and services before a large gathering.

We'd like to talk to new entrepreneurs and young people who want to come to this sector,” said Razib Ahmed.

The ICT Division has collaborated with the Bangladesh Association of Call Centres and Outsourcing (BACCO), e-CAB, Bangladesh Computer Samity (BCS), and professional bodies like the Bangladesh Computer Society, Bangladesh ICT Journalists’ Forum (BIJF), Bangladesh women in IT (BWIT) and the CTO Forum.

Sophia, a replica of Hollywood’s legendary actress Audrey Hepburn, will interact and answer questions from the audience. This particular session will be open to approximately 1,700 visitors.

“Sophia will take 10–15 questions from each visitor. Dr David Hanson will deliver a speech at the end of the session,” said Abu Naser.

The state minister for information and communication technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, will also be present.

Event organisers said that the expo would have more than 300 stalls and pavilions for IT exposition, 24 seminars and panel discussions, and an ICT Career Camp aimed at connecting investors, innovators, entrepreneurs, industry leaders and the country’s IT workforce.

“More than 130 e-CAB member companies expressed their desire to participate in the event. But we had to turn down almost half of them due to lack of space,” said a member of one of the organisers.

“A lot of expectation is being generated by Digital World 2017. We're getting closer to Vision Digital Bangladesh 2021,” he added.

In total, 11 e-CAB member companies have been selected for the start-up zone. Five of them will get stalls, while the others will get the opportunity to pitch for investment to local and foreign entrepreneurs.

The four-day event will host more than 200 ICT experts, analysts and representatives from top global IT firms, said Akram Haider, CEO of Projuktinet.

“As for the private sector, there are several zones such as e-commerce, software, gaming, robotics and mobile technology, among others. This is the first big event for e-CAB and we're very excited about it,” he added.
