China favours dialogue between Dhaka, Naypyidaw

China has assured of working more closely with Bangladesh and Myanmar to permanently solve the Rohingya crisis for ensuring peace and prosperity not only for these two countries but also the region. At the same time, Beijing expressed its happiness over the signing of the repatriation deal between Dhaka and Nay Pyi Daw and reiterated that solution to the problem through dialogue and consultation remains China’s main position.

“We are happy to note that both Bangladesh and Myanmar are making progress on this issue. Both governments have signed an initial agreement to address the issue. And, we are very happy to see that,” visiting Chinese assistant minister of international department of the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) Wang Yajun said while replying to a question after a thematic briefing on the recently-held 19th National Congress of the CPC that elected the leadership led by president Xi Jinping for another five years.

“At the same time we have been calling for the international community to create an enabling environment through dialogue and consultation to address this issue and the Chinese side will continue working more closely with government parties to promote dialogue and consultation in this regard so that this issue will be properly addressed for good and for a long term,” he told the briefing attended by senior leaders of various parties including ruling Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

“Through this process, we hope peace and prosperity and development not only in Bangladesh and Myanmar but also in the region,” he added through an interpreter.

Earlier, Awami League leader Faruk Khan called upon the Chinese side to exert his influence on Myanmar to resolve the crisis. The assistant minister said that it is always a blessing to have peaceful neighbours in your neighbourhood.

“China always wants to see peace and prosperity in the neighbourhood. We want to work in this regard,” he said.

Referring to Chinese foreign minister’s recent visit to Dhaka and Nay Pyi Taw, Wang Yajun said, “Our foreign minister recently visited Bangladesh and Myanmar and put forward a three step plan for the settlement of this issue. And, this three-step plan has been recognised by Bangladesh, Myanmar as well as the international community.”

“It is the principal position of the Chinese side to pursue the settlement of this issue through dialogue and consultation. And, we will play our role in this regard towards the settlement of the issue,” he added.

Describing Bangladesh as an important friend and partner, the assistant minister referred to the recently-held CPC Congress and said that China wants to develop along with its neighbours.

The Chinese believe in peaceful development respecting all other countries regardless of their sizes, he said.
