BNP may select
candidate today

The BNP is likely to nominate Tabith Awal as its mayoral candidate for the upcoming Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) bypolls scheduled to be held on February 26, said party sources. Awal is an executive member of the BNP.

However, a few other prospective candidates are also lobbying with senior party leaders to get nomination, said the sources. They are assistant publicity secretary of the party, Shakil Wahed, BNP special affairs secretary Dr Asaduzzaman Ripon, and BNP vice-chairman Barkatullah Bulu.

The BNP standing committee is scheduled to hold a meeting to discuss and finalize the party’s mayoral candidate for the DNCC bypolls. Party chairperson Khaleda Zia will convene the meeting at her Gulshan political office tonight.

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had said earlier that they would announce the party candidate at the standing committee meeting on Saturday. A standing committee member also confirmed to The Independent that the possible party candidate for the DNCC will be discussed

at the meeting.

“Usually, we discuss possible candidates at these meetings and entrust the party chairperson with the responsibility of finalizing the candidate. The process is likely to be followed in this case, too,” he said.

Awal, who had also contested the last DNCC mayoral elections, hoped to get the nomination if all aspects were taken into consideration. However, he said the nomination depends on the party.

Wahed said he is hopeful of getting the party nomination if his political background is taken into consideration. He has already unveiled his draft election manifesto on Facebook with the following catchphrase: “Making a world-class city.”

On the other hand, the ruling Awami League has decided to sell nomination papers for mayoral candidates on January 13–15. It is widely believed that former Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers’ and Exporters’ Association (BGMEA) president Atiqul Islam will be the party’s mayoral candidate for the DNCC bypolls. But no announcement has been made yet.

The Election Commission has already announced the schedule for the DNCC mayoral post, which fell vacant upon the death of mayor Annisul Huq.
