ECNEC okays 14 projects worth Tk 18,483cr

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) yesterday approved a total of 14 projects involving an overall estimated cost of Tk 18,482.92 crore including one to develop some 3,000 selected private secondary schools with Tk 10,649.05 crore.

The approval came from the 15th ECNEC meeting of the current fiscal year held at the NEC conference room at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital with ECNEC chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

Briefing the reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said that a total of 14 projects were approved by the ECNEC with an overall estimated cost of Tk 18,482.92 crore.

“Of the total outlay Tk 16,370.81 crore will come from the public exchequer, Tk 95 crore from the organisation’s own fund while the rest of Tk 2,017.11 crore from project assistance,” he added.

Of the approved 14 projects, nine are new while five are revised projects.

The Planning Minister said Education Engineering Department (EED) under the Secondary and Higher Education Division will implement the project titled ‘Development of selected private secondary schools’ by June 2020 with Tk 10,649.05 crore to be implemented across the country.

The main objective of the project is to fulfill the additional demand of students studying at the secondary level alongside creating proper environment for education there.

According to a report carried out by BANBEIS in 2014, the number of students at the secondary level is 91, 60,365. These students are studying at some 327 government secondary schools alongside 19,357 private secondary schools.

Under the project, there will be construction of academic building and other necessary buildings in these 3,000 selected private secondary schools across the country alongside ensuring supply of necessary furniture to these schools.

One of the most important projects of ECNEC meeting is the “priority rural water supply” project.

Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) will implement the project at cost of Tk 874.17 crore by 2019.

Planning minister said the government of Bangladesh is giving special emphasis on safe water supply and sanitation to ensure public health and environmental protection and now the sector is being considered as a high priority sector.

The overall purpose of this project is to increase the health and livelihood quality of the people through the expansion and development of safe water supply system and to maintain sustainable development goals.

The specific purpose of the project is to increase the safe water supply through setting up a safe water source and improvement of environment friendly sanitation by building public toilets.

The other approved projects are ‘Emergency 2007 Cyclone Recovery and Rehabilitation Project (ECRRP): LGED Part’ with the cost of Tk 1,618.10 crore, Construction of Flood Shelter Centres at Flood and River Erosion-prone Area (3rd phase) with the cost of Tk 1,507.43 crore, construction of district relief warehouse cum disaster management information centre involving Tk 127.41 crore, dredging and rubber dam construction of Mohananda river at Chapainawabganj district headquarter at cost of Tk 159.97 crore, Greater Chittagong Rural Infrastructure Development Project-3 with the estimated cost of Tk 1,290 crore, establishment of factory to ensure multipurpose use of milk and development of variety of cattle in greater Faridpur and its adjoining area  at cost of Tk 344.19 crore, construction of third Shitalakhya bridge at Bandar Upazila of Narayanganj at cost of Tk 599.28 crore, Widening of Chapapur-Barura, Nimsar-Barura and Khajuria-Barura District Highways (in Barura upazila of Comilla) at the cost of Tk 157.87 crore and Construction of seven RAB complexes (2nd revised) with Tk 599.08 crore, Construction of Multi-Storey Building for Cox’s Bazar Development Authority at the cost of Tk 112.37 crore, Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredient (API) Industrial Park (3rd revised) at the cost of Tk 381 crore, and Emergency 2007 Cyclone Recovery and Restoration Project (ECRRP): Project Coordination and Monitoring Unit (PCMU) Part (3rd revised) at an estimated cost of Tk 63 crore.
