15,512 posts soon for 7th Infantry Division

A total of 15,512 posts in 98 categories will be created for the proposed Barisal Area Command and Seven Infantry Division of the Bangladesh Army as part of implementing "Force Goal 2030". Under the proposed division, a new cantonment -- Sheikh Hasina Cantonment -- will be formed along the Payra River for strengthening the activities of the Bangladesh Army, government sources said.

For creating the 15,512 posts, a proposal has been prepared by the defence ministry and it will be placed at the meeting of the secretary committee on administrative improvement affairs, seeking its approval, the sources added.

The committee meeting will be held tomorrow (February 5) at the Cabinet Division, with the Cabinet Secretary in the chair. It will be the 10th area command and infantry division of the Bangladesh Army.

A senior officer of the Inter Service Public Relation (ISPR) told The Independent that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the Barisal Area Command and the Seven Infantry Division and the Sheikh Hasina Cantonment at Lebukhali on February 8.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), on November 14 last year, had approved the project involving an estimated cost of Tk. 1,699 crore.

According to the defence ministry’s proposal, the 15,512  posts will be created in 11 phases -- 3,023 posts in the first year, 3,335 in the second year, 2,685 in the third year, 1,524 in the fourth year, 407 in the fifth year, 891 in the sixth year, 958 in the seventh year, 712 in the eighth year, 740 in the ninth year, 740 in the tenth year and 497 posts in the eleventh year.

A total of 33 army organisations, including the required number of brigades, regiments, battalions and companies, will be set up under the new infantry division and cantonment.

The proposal says it will help ensure security of the country’s southern area -- greater Barisal -- where the Rampal Power Plant is being constructed.

There is no cantonment in Barisal and Patuakhali, though it is needed strategically and on national security grounds. At present, the area is under the 55 Infantry Division and Jessore Area Command, which is around 200 km from the area.

After it was approved by ECNEC, planning minister AHM Mustafa Kamal had said that the cantonment would be set up on some 1,532 acres, of which 567 acres have already been acquired.

This project will be implemented by the Ministry of Defence by June 2021, he said.

On June 25, 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the defence minister, had approved a proposal for setting up the new cantonment located at the middle of Barisal and Patuakhali.

At present, the Bangladesh Army is operating under nine area commands and infantry divisions and 28 cantonments across the country.

After the present government came to power, it purchased military hardware, fighter planes and helicopters, sophisticated arms and ammunition and security devices to enhance the efficiency and capabilities of the armed forces.
