Tarique to act as BNP chief

Tarique to act as BNP chief

BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman, now in London in self-exile, will act as the party chairman after BNP chief Khaleda Zia has been sentenced to five years in jail in connection with the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, according to party leaders. Since Tarique Rahman is now abroad, the party secretary general and standing committee members will run the party in consultation with him, said the leaders.

There will be no problem in carrying out party activities in the absence of Khaleda Zia, they asserted.

The former premier will have to stay in jail for at least three days until Sunday as there was no opportunity for her lawyers to file an appeal against the trial court verdict.

Citing the party constitution, BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said Tarique Rahman will act as the party chairman if Khaleda Zia is unable to perform her responsibilities.  He also said the party secretary general and policymakers would run party activities in consultation with Tarique Rahman.

He mentioned that BNP policymakers had to run the party in the past when the chairperson was put in prison for over a month after the 1/11 changeover.

Another standing committee member, Nazrul Islam Khan, echoed the same view, saying that the current senior vice-chairman will act as the party chief in the absence of Khaleda Zia. “In this age of technology, there is no problem in maintaining communication with Tarique Rahman, who is in London,” he added.Khan said this while talking to reporters outside the courtroom after Khaleda Zia was given five years’ jail term in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case yesterday.

Advocate Sanaullah Miah, Khaleda’s lawyer and the party’s law affairs secretary, yesterday said that they already applied for the certified copy of the verdict.  “We’ll move the High Court on Sunday if we get the certified copy of the verdict today (Thursday),” he added.

BNP sources, however, said that the bail procedure would be delayed if getting the certified copy of the verdict gets delayed. It depends on the High Court whether it would give bail to Khaleda. The court may decide issuance of bail immediately, the sources added.
