Govt instigating to create a violent situation: Fakhrul

Condemning police actions on their peaceful programme, BNP on Wednesday alleged that the government itself is provoking to create a violent situation in the country.

"The ministers of this illegal government are constantly making provocations to create a volatile situation in the country.

They themselves are trying to create a violent situation by carrying out repressive acts and instigating us. But we're very carefully avoiding it," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

"We want to clearly say we're carrying out a peaceful programme and we'll continue it in that manner," he said.

Fakhrul alleged that law enforcers attacked their 'completely a peaceful programme' without any provocation.

Narrating police actions, he said they took steps for observing the scheduled black-flag demonstration programme without blocking roads.

"But, the law enforcers attacked us without any provocation. They desperately arrested our leaders and activists, charged batons on them and dragged them into their vehicles entering our office."

The BNP leader continued, "As I asked them (police) about their action, they started splashing coloured water on me and continued beating our party leaders and activists. Our senior leaders and I got drenched with the water."

At one stage, he alleged, the police lobbed teargas towards the BNP office, creating a dangerous situation inside it. "The law enforcers by attacking BNP's programme have once again proved that the country is now under the grasp of serious misrule."

Fakhrul alleged that the government has resorted to repressive and undemocratic acts to eliminate the last sign of democracy from the country. "We strongly condemn the police action, and urged the government to stop such repression immediately."

Or else, he said, the government will have to shoulder the responsibility for anything bad if happens in the future.

Stating that police brutally attacked their party leader, especially the female ones, and arrested them, the BNP leader said Awami League is betraying with democracy.

He demanded the government immediately release those arrested in front of their party office.

Asked whether they got permission for their programme, Fakhrul said "Why should we take permission for all sorts of programmes. Why did police attack our peaceful programme? We didn't not block the road or take out any procession."

Earlier, police foiled BNP's black-flag demonstration programme in front of its Nayapaltan central office protesting the denial of permission to hold a rally in the city.

They also damaged a makeshift stage be built in front of the party office to stage their protests.

Police used water cannons, charged baton on the BNP activists to disperse them, leaving many BNP leaders and activists injured.unb.
