HC asks Health Ministry to examine WASA water in Chattogram

The High Court on Sunday directed the Health Ministry to form a body to examine the water supply of Chattogram Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) whether it contains any virus of Hepatitis-B or not.

The court also issued a rule seeking explanation, as to why the families, who were recently affected by Hepatitis-B virus, would not be compensated.

A bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Barrister Mohiuddin Md Hanif.

Secretary of Health Ministry, Deputy Director of Directorate General of Health Services, Chairman of Chattogram WASA, Chattogram Civil Surgeon, City Corporation Mayor, Chief Health official were asked to respond the rule within four weeks.

Mohiuddin said Health Ministry was directed to form three-member probe body within one month and submit its report within 90 days.

The matter came to light by a report published on Daily Azadi on June 30, over the outbreak of Hepatitis-B at several areas of Chattogram including Halishahar.UNB.
