The seventh edition of the 11-day theatre festival titled ‘Ganga-Jamuna Cultural Festival’ (Ganga-Jamuna Sangskritik Ustab 2018) kicked off yesterday on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

Eminent theatre personality Bivas Chakraborty from India and Mamunur Rashid from Bangladesh jointly inaugurate the festival yesterday, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor was as chief guest at the National Theatre Hall of BSA. Presided over by convener of festival organising committee Golam Kuddus, veteran theatre personality Ataur Rahman, Nasiruddin Yousuff and Liaquat Ali Lucky were present as the special guests at the inaugural ceremony.

Today, on the second day of the festival, Theatre, one of the most popular theatre troupes in the country will stage its much-acclaimed play ‘Meraj Fokirer Ma’ at 7pm at the Experimental Theatre Hall of BSA, while Kolkata based theatre troupe Aneek will stage its new play ‘Bish Ghum’ at the National Theatre Hall.

Written and directed by late noted theatre icon Abdullah Al Mamun, ‘Meraj Fakirer Ma’ poses a few very important question of life: What is more important--relationship or religion? Should a son leave his mother if his views regarding religion differ from that of hers? In fact, through this satirical play, the playwright tries to bring out the human values and depict certain characters, who oppress people in the name of religion.

On the other hand, Aneek, a group theatre with a difference, established on 28 December, 1988.
