Prachyanat and Aranyak Natyadal—two popular theatre troupes of the country will stage their much acclaimed plays today at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital. As a part of the ongoing 11-day ‘Ganga Jamuna Cultural Festival 2018’, Prachyanat will stage its play ‘A Man for All Seasons’ at the National Theatre Hall of BSA at 7pm, while Aranyak Natyadal will stage its play ‘The Jubilee Hotel’ at the BSA’s Experimental Theatre Hall at the same time.

The original script of ‘A Man for All Seasons’ was written by the British playwright Robert Bolt, while Shahed Iqbal translated it into Bengali.

Celebrated thespian Azad Abul Kalam has directed the play.

The play is about the life and times of Sir Thomas More — member of the Privy Council, Speaker of House of Commons, and Chancellor of the Exchequer — who was ultimately decapitated at the order of Henry VIII. Through a portrayal of Sir Thomas’ public duty, spiritual quest and private agonies the play foreshadows the hero’s canonization by the Roman Catholic Church in 1935.

The cast of the play includes Toufikul Emon, Azad A Kalam, Shakhawat H Rezvi, Topon Majumder, Reetu Sattar, Heera Chowdhury, Shatabdi Wadud, Shahed Ali and many more.

To note, the play, written in 1960, was first staged in 1961 in New York and 1999 in Dhaka.

On the other hand, scripted and directed by Mannan Hira, the play ‘The Jubilee Hotel’ is not about a hotel, but about a tea stall in a rural city. The story will show that people from different arenas gather in the Jubilee Hotel.

Like others, theatre director named Haru Mandal comes with his troupe regularly and has chat about a certain theatre production ‘Sultan Rajia’. This chat is being going on for 20 years, but the theatre didn’t appear on the stage, because they couldn’t find the proper actress to enact the lead character.

At that time, a magic troupe ‘The Ghosh Magic Party’ came into the town. Haru Mandal chooses dancer Hema Malini from the magic party. Haru then proposes her to act in the character, but her permanent contract with the magic party becomes an obstacle.  The play continues with different contradictions like this, at that time, a severe crisis appears.

The probable cast of the play includes Mannan Hira, Tamalika Karmakar, Arif Hossain Apel, Sajjad Saju, Rubli Chowdhury and others.

Earlier on October 5, Ganga Jamuna Cultural Festival 2018’ was opened with a dance drama titled ‘Tomari Matir Konya’ staged by Indian troupe Dancer’s Guild. Ganga-Jamuna Sangskritik Utsab Parshad has arranged the ‘Ganga-Jamuna Cultural Festival’ in association with Cultural Ministry of Bangladesh, India-Bangladesh Foundation, BSA and Mercantile Bank Limited.
