Indian troupe Prachya to stage ‘Lalshalu’ today

Based on Syed Waliullah’s novel ‘Lalshalu’, Kolkata-based theatre troupe Prachya (India) will stage their new play with the same title today evening at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

The play will be staged as a part of the ongoing seventh edition of the 11-day theatre festival titled ‘Ganga-Jamuna Cultural Festival’ (Ganga-Jamuna Sangskritik Ustab 2018).

Also, two local theatre troupes— Loko Natyadal (Banani) and Jagoroni Theatre —will stage their productions ‘Thikana’ and ‘Ami o Shema’ respectively at the Experimental Theatre Hall and Studio Theatre Hall at BSA at the same time at the same event.

Dramatised by Koushik Chattopadhyay and directed by Avanti Chakraborty, the play ‘Lalshalu’ narrates the tragic-comic study of religious hypocrisy, where a disreputable cleric convinces villagers that their community is home to a famous holy man’s grave.

The play begins in a remote agrarian village, suddenly a haggard-looking Mullah named Majid appears. He cleans up an old dilapidated grave and declares it as the shrine of a famous ‘Pir’ (a holy man).

He begins to take care of the shrine and worship it.

The villagers, of course, have no clue who the holy man was, and though it is a hoax, gradually give in and begin to believe in the myth. The story moves forward from this point.

Where: BSA, Segun Bagicha
