Deal inked to purchase 70 locomotives from S Korea

The government is going to purchase a total of 70 locomotives spending around Tk 1,987 crore from South Korea.

The Hyundai Rotem Company, a largest locomotive building company of South Korea, will construct the locomotives for Bangladesh by next 14 to 60 months.

Bangladesh Railway yesterday signed an agreement with Hyundai Rotem at Rail Bhaban in Dhaka in presence of Railways Minister Mujibul Haque.

Director of Hyundai Rotem Company Kwang-Kwun-Yoon and Project Director of Locomotive Procurement Project of the Railway Abdul Matin Chowdhury signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides.

Following the deal, the Hyundai Rotem will supply all the engines by next 18 to 60 months.

Terming the deal an important one, Railways Minister Mujibul Haque said Bangladesh is now facing engine crisis as the lifespan of 71 per cent engines has been expired. After getting new engines, it will be

possible to increase the number of trains on different routes.

It will help the government to improve the quality of services of railways in different routes and earn more revenues from the railway sector, he added.

At present, there are 178 meter-gauge locomotives in Bangladesh Railway.

Among them, the economic lifespan of 139 locomotives has been already expired.

So, it is needed to replace the locomotives with new one as soon as possible, said Mujibul Haque.

Among others, railway ministry secretary Mofazzal Hossain, railway director general Kazi Rafiqul Alam and Hyundai Rotem Company president Seung Tack Kim were also present during the signing ceremony.
