Tagore’s Chitrangada

National Film Award winning actress Naznin Hasan Chumki is set to appear as Tagore’s Chitrangada in a dance drama titled ‘Nohi Debi Nohi Samanya Nari’ produced by prominent cultural organisation Sadhona. The production will be brought to the stage today evening at a function at Bangla Academy in the capital on the occasion of the 35th founding anniversary of rights organisation Naripokkho.

DhakaLive has news that noted dance exponent-art director-researcher Lubna Marium has dramatised and written the screenplay for the production based on Tagore’s dance drama ‘Chitrangada’ while Sweety Das Chowdhury has directed it. Besides, Nirjhar Chowdhury has worked as the music director for the production.

Naznin Hasan Chumki said about performing as Chitrangada, “Once I played the role of Chitrangada in my school life. After that I never had an opportunity to appear as Chitrangada anymore. Today, after so many years, I am going to appear as Chitrangada on the stage again. It makes me feel wonderful which I cannot express in words. I am grateful to Lubna Marium and director Sweety Das Chowdhury for involving me with such a great production.”

The audience will witness as many as three appearances of Chitrangada played by three different artistes in ‘Nohi Debi Nohi Samanya Nari’ today. Among the three avatars of Chitrangada, Chumki will be seen in acting while Sweety Das in dancing and Simu Das in singing. However, the last time Chumki acted in a stage play was ‘Nityapuran’, written and directed by Masum Reza. She had played the role of Draupadi there.

On the other hand, the actress is currently acting in several drama serials on the small screen regularly, these are Juboraz Khan’s ‘Ba-te Bondhur Hutoputi’, Rulin Rahman’s ‘Bhalobasa Kare Koy’, Alvi Ahmed’s ‘The Genaration’ and Babor’s ‘Babor Ali Return’.
