Shamsur Rahman to be recalled on 90th birth anniversary

Today marks the 90th birth anniversary of noted poet, writer and columnist Shamsur Rahman. In memory of the prolific figure, Bangla Academy is organising a solo-lecture session on his life and work at its auditorium at 3 pm today.

Chaired by Poet Asad Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of Sheikh Hasina University Professor Rafique Ullah Khan will address the event.

On the other hand, publishing house Boi News will hold a discussion today at Srabon Prokashoni in the capital’s Hatirpul area. Robin Ahsan, publisher of Srabon Prokashoni, will discuss on ‘Shamsur Rahman-er Kobitay Muktijuddha’ (Freedom fight in Shamsur Rahman’s poetry) at the event. Besides, Nazmul Ahsan, Masum Azizul Basar, Rezwana Ananna, Poly Parvin, Mahera Binte Rafiq and Sakib Abdullah, among others, will recite the poems of Poet Shamsur Rahman.

Born in 1929, Shamsur Rahman was a Bangladeshi poet, columnist and journalist, who emerged in the later half of the 20th century, wrote more than sixty books of poetry and is considered a key figure in Bengali literature.

Shamsur Rahman’s first book of poetry, ‘Prothom Gaan Dwityo Mrittyur Agey’ (First Song before the Second Death) published in 1960.  His famous poem ‘Shadhinota Tumi Robi Thakurer Ojhor Kobita, Obinashi Gaan’ was written in 1971 during the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

Besides, he wrote novels, children’s literature, and an autobiography. He received ‘Adamjee Award’ in 1962, ‘Bangla Academy Award’ in 1969, ‘Ekushey Padak’ in 1977, ‘Swadhinata Dibosh Award’ in 1991, Mitsubishi Award of Japan in 1992 and many more.

He died on August 17 in 2006 at the age of 77.
