A local boy and a young Rohingya man sustained bullet injuries as Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) opened fire on them at bordering Rahmaterbill in Ukhiya upazila on Sunday.

The injured were identified as Zainal Abedin, 13, son of Sahab Uddin of Rahmaterbill village, and Nurul Islam, a Rohingya of Balukhali camp-1.

Locals said Nurul used to work as a cowboy of Anwar Hossain of the village.

Quoting witnesses, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Ukhiya Police Station Khairuzzaman said a BGP team opened fire on the duo around 1pm when they were grazing cattle along the border, reports UNB.

As locals rushed in to rescue the injured, the Myanmar border guards also fired shots at them.

The injured were rescued after the BGP stopped firing and taken to a Red Crescent Hospital at Kutupalong in Ukhiya, Khairuzzaman said.

Commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion-34 Lt Col Manjurul Hasan Khan said they heard gunshots from the border. "Later, we came to know that two people suffered bullet wounds in firing by Myanmar Border Guard Police."
