Rajshahi Division emerged as the champions in the National Cricket League (NCL) after six years to equal the record of Khulna Division’s six titles in the country’s first class cricket competition yesterday as they thrashed Barishal by six wickets on the final day of the last round of the competition at their home venue Shaheed Kamruzzaman Stadium.

Junaid Siddique was the key in comprehensive victory hitting 120 not out to help the side overhaul the target of 284 before the lunch session. Resuming the day on 182 for two, riding on Junaid’s ton, Rajshahi took just 25 overs to seal the deal.

Junaid who started with overnight 65 made the bulk of the runs, hitting 17 fours in the knock of 120 unbeaten off 181 balls.

The former national player also hit 78 runs in the first innings, to be adjudged man of the match. He was aptly supported by Jahurul Islam Omee who struck 65, beginning the day on 25.

Rajshahi indeed made the victory a one-way traffic, having dismissed Barishal for 97 runs in the first innings, thanks to a five for 24 runs of youngster Mohor Sheikh. The home side though didn’t fare well in their first innings, they took a handy 63 runs lead by scoring 160.

Barishal, on the brink of being demoted to the Tier-2, Barishal put up a spirited performance in the second innings, led by Al-Amin Hossain who hit 97 as the side compiled 346 runs, to set a 284 runs target for Rajshahi. However it mattered little.

Barishal finally was demoted to Tier-2. With two wins and four draws in six matches, Rajshahi earned a total of 34.81 points to emerge as the champion. Barishal’s point is just 14.61.

Dhaka Division however replaced Barishal in the Tier-1, claiming the top spot in Tier-2.

In Rajin Saleh’s last competitive cricket match, his side held on Dhaka to draw the match at the Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium in Cox’s Bazar. Rajin who scored 67 in the first innings, played a brilliant 87 as Sylhet ended the second innings on 303 for six before the umpires called it a day.

Sylhet made 238 in its first innings while Dhaka, riding on Abdul Majid’s century racked up 346 in its only innings. The other two matches—Khulna vs Rangpur in Tier and Dhaka Metro vs Chattogram Division in Tier-2 also ended in a draw.
