Polls now on Dec 30

EC defers date by a week following requests by political parties
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
Polls now on Dec 30

The chief election commissioner (CEC), KM Nurul Huda, yesterday announced December 30 as the new election date after considering appeals made by political parties for rescheduling of the general election. On October 8, the CEC had set December 23 as the 11th parliamentary election date.

The CEC said the last date for submission of nomination papers is November 28. Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on December 2 and withdrawal of candidacy has been set for December 9.

The CEC announced the new schedule at the inauguration of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) fair at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital.“Various political parties have decided to contest the polls. We firmly believe that all political parties will join the polls. We welcome their decision. So, we have decided to reschedule the polls, considering the request of the political parties to defer it,” the CEC said.

“The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Oikyafront and other parties have decided to join the polls. The new date will make it easy for them to participate in the elections,” he added.

As per the previous schedule declared on November 8, the last date for filing of nomination papers was November 19. Scrutiny was to be done on November 22 and the last date for withdrawing candidature was November 29. The commission came up with the rescheduling of the election date a day after the Jatiya Oikyafront, which includes the BNP and other political parties, and another alliance, Jukta Front, requested the EC to reschedule the polls.

On Sunday, the CEC had told the media that the decision on deferment would be taken on Monday.

Jatiya Oikyafront had urged the EC to defer the elections by one month as it needed time for preparations. On the other hand,

Jukta Front also requested the EC to reschedule the polls by fixing December 30 as the day of election.

Jukta Front chairman AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury welcomed the EC’s decision.

In a statement, Badruddoza Chowdhury, also president of Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, said: “We are happy that the CEC has accepted our proposal for setting the election day on December 30. I cordially thank the CEC and all other commissioners for the rescheduling,

considering the public opinion and their interest.” Even Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader had earlier said they have no objection to the EC rescheduling the polls.

The countdown for the 11th parliamentary polls started on November 1. The EC has the constitutional obligation to hold the elections within January 28. Oikyafront is firm in its demand for deferment of the election schedule by one month. Oikyafront leader ASM Abdur Rab said they will remain firm in their demand and announce further programme in this regard.

“The New Year will be on just after a day of the election day on December 30. At that time, diplomats and foreign observers will not be in the country. The government has taken such a decision intentionally to thwart the polls,” Rab told journalists after a meeting of Oikyafront in the capital. The Awami League has welcomed the new election schedule.
