Month-long group art show underway at Café Mango

A month-long group art exhibition titled ‘King Kortobbyo’ is underway at Café Mango and Gallery in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

The inaugural ceremony of the exhibition was held on gallery premises on November 24. The inaugural ceremony was attended by eminent artists Monirul Islam, Abul Barq Alvi, Associate Professor of Department of Fine Arts of UODA Dr Rashid Amin, Bangladesh Brand Forum Director Nazia Andaleeb Preema, Managing Director of Benchmark Limited Ashraf Kaiser and artist Wakilur Rahman.

The exhibition displays collective artworks by visual artists and creative writer – Azizee Fawmi Khan, Rakib Anwar, Khairul Alam, Al Nasir, Jawad Hossain, Pijush Talukder and Mehedi Hasan.

The idea behind ‘King Kortobbyo’ is to use the cafeteria space to blend art into conversation, which is why the subject of the works addresses human life, inner thoughts and expressions, emotions and many contemporary issues of society.

‘KingKortobbyo’ aims to satire the absolutist ideas of being right or wrong, reasoning that even the absolute right will eventually feel like absolute wrong by virtue of its self-absorbed authoritarian nature. The artworks presents a juxtaposition of utopian and dystopian state of minds to acknowledging the coexistence of good and evil within everyone.

The concept for the exhibition is unconventional in a sense that every member of the group had an input in each other’s work and the artworks at display on each walls are intended to be viewed collectively as one work. Most of the participants come from a professional background in advertising and media, with experience in art direction, visualization, audio visual, cinematography and copywriting. The artworks show a heavy influence of commercial art, elements of pop art and shock art through use of vibrant colours and texts.

The exhibition remains open to all every day from 12pm to 10pm until December 21.
