Family members of victims of ‘enforced disappearance’ demand justice
Relatives hold photos of disappeared persons during a press meet at the National Press Club in the capital yesterday, calling upon authorities to trace the whereabouts of their near ones. Cry for justice for the missing people is even being heard in December after August 30 when the world observes International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. Independent Photo

Family members of the victims of “enforced disappearances” yesterday organised a meeting in the capital to demand whereabouts of their dear and near ones. About 22 families and rights activists from different parts of the country joined the discussion under the banner of “Mayer Daak” (“Call of Mother”) at the National Press Club to press home their demands.

The family members of the victims said that they have been denied justice by the state. Marufa Islam Ferdousi, sister of the missing BNP leader Sajedul Islam Shumon, said she has been searching for her brother for the last six years.

Hafsa Islam Raida, the daughter of Shumon, said: “I’m growing up without my father. I hope he would come back home one day.” Mehedi Hasan, brother of Shahnur Alam who died in a hospital after allegedly being tortured in Rab custody in Brahmanbaria in May 2014, said he did not want justice anymore as five years have already passed. “I now just want to know why my brother was killed brutally. The knowledge would be justice for me,” he added. Seven-year-old Adiba Islam Hridi, daughter of Chhatra Dal leader Parvez Hossain who remains missing since 2013, requested Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take steps to find her father. “Now I move holding my father’s photograph in my hand. I don’t want to do it anymore. I want to move holding his hand. Hasina aunty, please return my father to me,” she pleaded.

Nagorik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said the families of the victims of enforced disappearance cannot pray for their near and dear ones as they do not know whether their dear and near ones are dead or live.  “When a man is killed, he is buried and the unbearable suffering ends at one point. But the long wait of a family of a victim of enforced disappearance never ends,” he added.
