Unheralded Al Islam Aliss surprised the sold-out stadium with his sheer bowling performance that helped Dhaka Dynamites outfox the holders Rangpur Riders in the high-pressure match of the first Dhaka phase in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur yesterday.

Al Islam, who hailed from Baliarpur, Savar to bowl at Dhaka Dynamites net ahead of the 2019 BPL, was picked by Dynamites team manager-turned-coach Khaled Mahmud Sujon for the main squad of the Dhaka Dynamites.

He has no experience to play at higher level cricket before his game in BPL. He was not impressive in fielding but he stunned all by his bowling at the pressure situation, where Dynamites’ fate was on the brink of jeopardised.  The situation was Rangpur Riders being on 158 for four, needing just 26 runs in the last three over.  He came in to bowl his fourth over and made two dot balls.

He gave a run to third balls and then he implanted his name in BPL history.

He made a possibility of credible hat-trick on his BPL debut by removing Mohammad Mithun and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. He then completed his hat-trick by getting rid of Forhad Reza. He is the first bowler in BPL to slam hat-trick on debut though Al Amin Hossain and Mohammad Sami struck hat-trick in BPL. Of them, Sami hammered twice.

His hat-trick clawed Dynamites back in the match and Sunil Narine put the last screws on the Riders’ innings with his double strikes. Later he bowled the last over that brought a thin-wafer margin of two runs that maintained the unbeaten winning spree.

“I was the net bowler of Dhaka Dynamites. I earlier played in First Division Cricket League. Sujon sir saw me while I was bowling at net,” said  Al Islam, who finished with his bowling figures of 4-26 and later named player of the match.

“To see me, he believes I could do well and then he pick me for the Dhaka Dynamites. The team management and players support me. And then I am in the playing XI,” Al Islam told media at his post-match press conference yesterday.

“Actually it was my first match in BPL. To be honest, it was my first match in this stadium. I was very much nervous. Despite dropping two catches, the teammates and the coach support me enough. Actually, all give me support. I deems to me that if I could bowl in right areas then I could do something well. I just wanted to bowl in right areas.”

“I started my cricket career for Green Crescent Club at Kathalbagan. Then I played in First Division after playing few years in Second division. And then, I played the first match in BPL,” he told in response to a query.

“I am local boy of Dhaka. I live at Baliarpur in Savar.”

“Shakib bhai was just telling me that you’re doing well. So, you bowl in right areas.”

“I could have got to know about my playing in BPL yesterday’s evening. Sir told me that you be prepared physically and mentally. I was fully prepared. It was a matter of nervous to play in a big tournament at a big stadium. Initially I was nervous but I overcame it later on.”

“Actually I bowled the last two balls of the penultimate over out of the stumps what Shafiul bhai hit a good knock. Then I thought of bowling inside the stumps. But I was confident and though I could do it.”
