Indo-Argentine ‘Thinking of Him’ and Jaya-starrer ‘Debi’ under spotlight today

Indo-Argentine film ‘Thinking of Him’, which explores Rabindranath Tagore’s relationship with Argentinian feminist, writer and activist Victoria Ocampo, will be screened today at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum in Shahbag of the capital.

Besides, celebrated Bangladeshi actress Jaya Ahsan-starrer film ‘Debi’ will be screened today at the Public Library Auditorium located also in Shahbag.

Both the films will be screened as a part of the ongoing 17th edition of ‘Dhaka International Film Festival’ (DIFF) taking place at the various venues in the capital. ‘Thinking of Him’ will be screened at 5pm in the Spiritual Section of the festival, while Debi’ will be screened at 5:30pm in Bangladesh Panorama section.

Directed by Pablo Cesar, the film ‘Thinking of Him’ flits between the present day and 1924, when Tagore visited Argentina, where he met Ocampo.

Synopsis of ‘Thinking of Him’ shows two stories intertwine over the time.

In the present, Felix, pessimistic and lazy teacher encounter a book that dazzles him, while he teaches geography in a detention centre for minors. In the past Rabindranath Tagore, Bengali poet, author of the book that has come to Felix arrives in Argentina and hosted by Victoria Ocampo, who lives a brief and innocent romance. Felix While more and more obsessed with the story of the poet and journalist, it is approaching to the spiritual notions on which Tagore founded a revolutionary school in India. From the readings from the books of Tagore and Ocampo we go through the events that zoom in and out to these remarkable personalities of world culture that torn between the love and estrangement. Felix intends to visit India and experience himself the teaching method that Tagore dreamed for all mankind. Alongside the story of platonic love between the Bengali Master and the young Argentina writer reaches a set point: after the meeting in Buenos Aires back together years later in Paris. Their goodbye for the last time, everyone to his own way, but saying its impossible love and mutual admiration.

Victor Banerjee plays the Nobel prizewinning Indian poet in the film, while Eleonora Wexler plays Ocampo. The film also stars Hector Bordoni and Raima Sen.

On the other hand, ‘Debi’, produced by Jaya Ahsan’s production house C tey Cinema and directed by Anam Biswas, is based on the much-talked-about novel of late famous writer, playwright and director Humayun Ahmed with the same title which also features his famous creation Misir Ali.

The story of the film revolves around the life of Ranu and her paranormal powers. She goes to psychiatrist Misir Ali to find an answer to all her questions. Joya Ahsan plays the role of Ranu, while Chanchal plays the role of Misir Ali, the protagonist.  The other important cast of the film includes Animesh Aich, Labonno Chowdhury, Shabnam Faria and Iresh Zaker.
