Farmers eye bumper mustard yield

Farmers of Laxmipur district expect bumper crops this year. According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DEA), a total of 258 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation in five upazilas under the district.

Mouju Chowdhury ghat, Char Romoni and Babinigonj areas are currently now covered with yellow mustard flowers.

In Sadar upazila, 890 hectares of land have been brought under mustard cultivation. Mustard cultivation is taking place on 160 hectares in Raipur, 15 hectares in Ramgonj, 5 hectares in Ramgati and 11 hectares in Kamalnagar upazila. This year, the production target has been fixed at 415 metric tonnes.

Jamal Hossain, a marginal farmer of Babanigonj, told The Independent that the market price is now conducive to the benefits of farmers.

Farmers said they are hopeful of getting bumper production of mustard and harvest will begin in the third or fourth week of next month.

Farmers of Feni district also expect great mustard yields this year.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DEA), farmers in the district cultivated mustard on 1,450 hectares of land.

As much as 890 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 90 hectares in Chagalniya upazila, 62 hectares in Fulgazi upazila, 75 hectares in Parshuram upazila, 20 hectares in Daganbhuiyan upazila and 280 hectares in Sonagazi upazila have been brought under mustrad cultivation, with a production target of 37,751 metric tonnes, in this district.

Moti Miah, a grower in Sadar upazila, said he has cultivated mustard on 30 hectares with technical support from the local agricultural officer.
