Ekushey Padak-winning lyricist, composer, music director and freedom fighter (FF), Ahmed Imtiaz Bulbul, died of a heart attack at the age of 63 at his Aftabnagar residence in the capital yesterday (Tuesday) morning.

Born in Dhaka in 1956, Ahmed Imtiaz joined Liberation War of Bangladesh at the age of 15.

He is known for composing many of the country’s most patriotic songs along with crafting songs and background scores for hundreds of movies.

The artiste became widely recognised for the timeless tunes he gave to songs like ‘Shob Kota Janala Khule Dao Na’, ‘O Majhi Nao Chaira De’ and ‘Sundor Suborno Tarunno Labonyo’. He also created background scores for hundreds of movies.

Ahmed Imtiaz debuted as a music director by creating music for the 1978 film ‘Megh Bizli Badal’.

He dedicated his lifetime to the practice of music.

Ahmed Imtiaz’s creations ‘Amar Saradeho Kheyogo Mati’, ‘Amar Babar Mukhe’, ‘Amar Buker Moddhekhane’ and ‘Ami Tomar Duti Chokher Duti Tara Hoye’ for the film ‘Noyoner Alo’ became timeless hits.

The artiste received twice the National Award for Best Music Director for his work in the film ‘Premer Tajmohol’ in 2001 and ‘Hazar Bochor Dhore’ in 2005.

In 2010, he was awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak by the Bangladesh government for his outstanding contribution to the country’s music culture.

The artiste wrote, composed and directed songs for the films ‘Sahajatri’, ‘Hisab Chai’, ‘Moroner Pore’, ‘Ankhi Milon’, ‘Lokkhir Songsar’, ‘Bikkhov’, ‘Moha Milon’, ‘Shilpi’, ‘Tomake Chai’, ‘Biyer Phul’, ‘Praner Cheye Priyo’, ‘Anondo Osru’, ‘Amar Ontore Tumi’, ‘Chaowa Theke Paowa’, ‘Mayer Odhikar’, ‘Premer Taj Mahal’, ‘Bou Shashurir Juddho’, ‘Wrong Number’, ‘Dui Noyoner Alo’, ‘Bajao Biyer Bajna’, ‘Podmo Patar Jol’, ‘Pora Mon’, ‘Angaar’ and many others.

Apart from his work for cinema, Bulbul composed lyrics and music for albums released by contemporary stars like Sabina Yasmin, Runa Laila, Syed Abdul Hadi, Andrew Kishore, Samina Chowdhury, Khalid Hassan Milu, Agun, Kanak Chapa and many others.

In separate condolence messages, Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and state minister for cultural affairs KM Khalid prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.

The Speaker said the people of the country have lost a bright star in the musical field at his death.

The information minister said, “We have lost a real patriot and a devoted musician.”

The state minister said Imtiaz’s death was an irreparable loss. The country has lost a noted musician on his death, he added.
