DUCSU elections on March 11

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
DUCSU elections on March 11

The much-awaited elections to the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) will be held on March 11. The university authorities announced the poll schedule at the Nawab Nabab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban yesterday (Monday).

The chief returning officer, Prof. SM Mahfuzur Rahman of the Department of International Business, announced the schedule of the elections on behalf of the administration yesterday (Monday).

Polling will be held from 8am to 2pm on the voting day and results will be announced the same day. The last date of submission of nomination papers is February 26, while the distribution of nomination papers will begin on February 19. It will continue till February 25. The primary list of candidates will be published on February 27. Elections will be held in the halls and candidates can collect and submit nomination forms from their respective halls.

The chief returning officer said candidates can withdraw candidatures by March 2. The final candidate list will be published on March 3, he said. “The supplementary voter list will be published on March 5. The draft voters’ list was announced and made available on notice boards and on the university web portal yesterday,” he said.

“The students can exercise their franchise at the voting

centres of their respective halls by showing their ID cards,” he added.

The 25 important posts that would be filled under Sections 6(b) and 7(a) are: vice-president, general secretary, assistant general secretary, freedom fighter and Liberation War affairs secretary, science and technology secretary, literary secretary, athletics secretary, common room and cafeteria secretary, international affairs secretary, cultural secretary, student transport secretary and social service secretary. The remaining 13 are general members.

On January 19, the Dhaka University (DU) authorities appointed five returning officers to help the chief returning officer conduct the polls under Section 8(e) of the existing constitution of DUCSU and hall union elections.

Apart from Prof. Mahfuzur Rahman, the other five returning officers are: Soil, Water and Environment department chairperson Prof. Dr Md. Didar-ul-Alam, Mathematics department professor Dr Amal Krishna Halder, Disaster Management and Vulnerability Studies Institute director Prof. Mahbuba Nasreen, Islamic History and Culture department’s Prof. Dr Abdul Basir and Computer Science and Engineering department’s Prof. Dr Mustafizur Rahman.

Though DUCSU elections are supposed to be held every year, the last elections to DUCSU were held on July 6, 1990. In the past 28 years, DU students could not cast their votes for selecting their representatives as the election process was suspended. On January 17, 2018, the High Court ordered the DU authorities to take steps to organise the DUCSU elections within six months.
