Hajj packages get dearer as KSA hikes service charges, fares

Hajj packages get dearer as KSA hikes service charges, fares

The state minister for religious affairs, Sheikh Md Abdullah, yesterday said the government has to increase the Hajj expenditures for pilgrims due to the charges and taxes imposed by the Saudi Arabian government.

“We tried to reduce the Hajj expenditures for the betterment of Bangladeshi pilgrims this year. The plane fare was fixed at Tk.

128,000 as opposed to the Biman’s proposal of fixing the fare at Tk. 148,000. Last year, the pilgrims had to cough up Tk. 138,000 each as plane fare,” he said while briefing the media about the new Hajj policy and Hajj packages at his ministry.

The cabinet, on February 11, approved the draft Hajj policy and two separate Hajj packages for Bangladeshi pilgrims. Under the two packages, the pilgrims will have to pay Tk. 418,500 for availing Package-1 and Tk. 344,000 for Package-2.

Sheikh Abdullah said the Saudi authorities this year imposed Tk. 25,000 and Tk. 19,035 as various charges and taxes for pilgrims wiling to avail Package-1 and Package-2 respectively. At the same time, the Biman authorities proposed to increase the plane fare by Tk. 20,000 for each pilgrim. As a result, Package-1 is being proposed for Tk. 442,910 and Package-2 for Tk. 370,000.

“But Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very concerned about these issues. She wants a hazard-free Hajj travel and adequate services for all pilgrims. But the Saudi authorities are not willing to cut their charges and taxes. Considering these issues, the plane fare was cut by around Tk. 10,000, while the two packages were set at Tk 418,500 and Tk 344,000 respectively,” he added.

Sheikh Abdullah assured that his ministry would ensure a hazard-free and smooth Hajj management this year. “I believe that the pilgrims will not have any complaints against the Hajj authorities and agents. We will try to ensure all services to the ‘guests of Allah’. If any exception is found, tough steps will be taken," he asserted.

Asked whether third carriers would be allowed for carrying pilgrims with less fare, religious affairs secretary Anisur Rahman said the Saudi authorities did not agree to allow third carriers. "They would only allow the national carriers of all pilgrim sending countries tfor carrying 50 per cent of the pilgrims, while the rest would be carried by the Saudi Arabian Airlines," he added.

Asked why the Bangladesh government is allowing the Saudi Airlines to pocket an extra Tk. 600 crore, Anisur Rahman said the government can do nothing in this regard. "All pilgrim-sending countries are bound to follow the rules set by the Saudi authorities. Otherwise, normal flight operations can be interrupted," he explained.
