PM orders immediate relocation: Quader

chemical warehouses in Old Dhaka
STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka
PM orders immediate relocation: Quader

Awami League (AL) general secretary Obaidul Quader yesterday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already instructed the authorities concerned, including the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), to relocate all chemical warehouses from old Dhaka in a bid to prevent future outbreaks.

“As the Prime Minister has directed the relocation of all chemical warehouses from old Dhaka, I hope it would be done as soon as possible,” Quader told reporters after visiting Chawkbazar fire victims being treated at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

On Wednesday, at least 70 people were killed after a massive fire raced through several apartments, which were also used as chemical warehouses at Chawkbazar in old Dhaka.

A similar fire incident had taken place at Nimtoli in June 2010, in which 123 people were killed and 50 others sustained burns. After the Nimtoli fire, the government had been urged to relocate chemical warehouses from old Dhaka to Keraniganj, but little has been done in this regard even nine years after that tragedy.

Replying to a question, Quader said the government is not sitting idle after the devastating Chawkbazar fire incident.

“The government cannot avoid its responsibility for the Chawkbazar tragedy. After the Nimtoli fire incident, we took initiatives to relocate chemical warehouses from that part of the town, but there has been lack of close monitoring,” he added.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said the government is trying to find out alternatives to the

use of gas cylinders in pickup trucks and other vehicles. “I have already instructed the secretary of my ministry to find alternatives in this regard to prevent reoccurrence of such incidents. And I hope a solution will come out soon,” he added

Referring to BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the AL general secretary said no one should politicise the issue. On Thursday, Fakhrul had held the government responsible for the devastating fire incident in Chawkbazar.
