Bangladesh says New Zealand terror attack unfortunate

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Friday termed unfortunate the terrorist attacks at two mosques in a country like New Zealand that killed at least 49 people, including three Bangladeshis.

Briefing reporters about the attacks at Osmani International Airport, he also said Bangladesh national cricket team players are safe and given adequate security by local security forces.

“This is unfortunate that such attacks have been made in a country which claimed itself as terrorism-free one,” the minister said.

Mentioning that Bangladesh does not have any embassy in New Zealand, Momen said they are gathering information about the attacks through different sources.

“But our cricketers are fine and safe. The New Zealand security forces are giving the highest security to them,” he added.

The Foreign Minister expressed deep shock over the loss of lives and injuries in the deadly terrorist attacks.

New Zealand government says 49 people have been killed and more than 20 seriously wounded in shootings at two mosques.

Four suspects have been detained.

Bangladesh cricket team, currently in Christchurch to play against New Zealand, narrowly escaped the attack. The third and final Test between Tigers and the Kiwis has been called off.

Bangladesh Honorary Consul Shafiqur Rahman Bhuiyan told UNB that three Bangladeshis are among those killed in Christchurch terror attack at mosques while several others were injured.

He also said they are taking necessary steps to send cricketers back home as early as possible. UNB
