Poll officials among 7 shot dead in CHT

Seven people, including election officials and law enforcers, were killed and 16 others injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on them after the end of voting in upazila parishad polls at Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati yesterday. Confirming the news, Rangamati superintendent of police (SP) Alamgir Kabir told The Independent that the attack took place at Sajek union while election officials, along with security agency personnel, were returning to the upazila headquarters after concluding vote counting.

The deceased include as M Amir Hossain, assistant presiding officer of a polling centre at Kanglak and a teacher of Kishaloy Govt Primary School, and VDP members M Al Amin, Bilkis, Sohel and Mihir Kanti Dutta, said Superintendent of Police M Alamgir Kabir.

The SP said some unidentified miscreants suddenly open fired in ‘Noymile’ area under the upazila around 6pm.

On information, members of Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh rushed in and hurried the victims to the upazila health complex with the help of local people.

“Two of the injured died after they were taken to the Baghaichhari Upazila Health Complex.

Some of the injured were taken to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Chattogram as their condition deteriorated,” added SP Kabir. The SP also said that they were investigating the incident and that they were yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack.

Baghaichhari, Naniarchar and Kaukhali upazilas in Rangamati went to polls yesterday in the second phase of the fifth upazila parishad elections.
