Law enforcement agencies could not arrest anyone until yesterday evening even two days after the killing of seven polling officials and security personnel in Baghaichhari upazila of Rangamati district. Police filed a case against 40-50 unidentified persons for the attack.

The office-in-charge of Baghaichhari police station, Manjurul Alam, said: “We became alert soon after the incident.

Crackdown is continuing with the joint efforts of the Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the police. Security has been beefed up in the area to prevent any further attacks.”

Another attack took place on Tuesday, this time on an Awami League (AL) upazila unit president in Bilaichari upazila. No case was filed with the police station till yesterday. “No one has come to file any case in connection with the attack on the AL leader. We have tried to contact relatives of the victim,” said Parvej Ali, office-in-charge of Bilaichhari police station.

Law enforcers are continuing their combing operation to hunt down the killers.  “The general people need not panic. It’s an isolated incident. The attackers unleashed the violence suddenly and fled the scene,” said Regional Commander of Khagrachari, Brigadier General Hamidul Haque.

The government has formed an eight-member probe body to look into the incident. Chattogram divisional ommissioner Abdul Mannan constituted the investigation team, headed by the director of the Local Government Division of Chattogram region, Deepak Chakraborty. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 10 working days.

The Parbatya Bangali Chhatra Parishad has called off their hartal in the district protesting the incident yesterday. A tense situation is prevailing in Baghaichhari Upazila after the killings. Local Awami League (AL) leaders have accused the Janasanghati Samiti (JSS) for the attack. The JSS has denied the allegation and demanded a thorough probe.
