Ferdous apologies for ‘unintentional mistake’

Celebrated Bangladeshi film actor Ferdous Ahmed, who is also widely popular in the Kolkata film industry, in a statement issued on Wednesday regretted his participation in an election campaign in India’s West Bengal and rendered an apology for what he termed his ‘unintentional mistake’.

In his statement, he said: “I am a citizen of independent Bangladesh. As a citizen of an independent country, I should not take part in the election campaign of national polls of another country.

I am seeking an apology of my unintended mistakes. I hope all concerned will see my accidental mistake with forgiveness.”

The actor admitted his mistake in taking part in a campaign of the national polls of other country. He apologised to the authorities concerned. However, the Indian government cancelled his visa and blacklisted him for joining the election campaign of the Trinamool Congress party in West Bengal. Following the incident, he had to leave India immediately. He returned home on Tuesday night.

Earlier, on April 12, Ferdous went to Kolkata for a shoot. During his stay there, he took part in the campaigning for the election to the 17th Lok Sabha on behalf of Trinamool Congress without any prior plan.

On Monday (April 15), Ferdous campaigned in Karandighi and Chakulia areas of North Dinajpur and on Sunday, he was expected to participate in roadshows at Raiganj and Hemtabad along with Tollywood actors Payel Sarkar and Ankush, according to India Today magazine.

A major political row broke out over popular film star Ferdous Ahmed being roped in for Trinamool Congress’s campaign.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lodged a complaint with India’s election commission, claiming Ferdous’s poll campaign for Trinamool violated the model code of conduct. State BJP leaders Jay Prakash Majumdar and Sisir Bajoria met the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO), Ariz Aftab, and urged him to take appropriation action over the alleged violation of the model code. l
