Joy to meet AL leaders after Eid

The Awami League (AL) has taken the initiative to prepare a database of its grassroots-level leaders of all units in an effort to strengthen the party from the top to the bottom. As it is the idea of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, he has been giving instructions to party leaders to prepare the

database.

Joy, also the ICT advisor to the Premier, will hold a meeting with the office secretaries of all upazila units of the AL after Eid-ul-Fitr. Sheikh Hasina will also be present at the programme.

“Our Prime Minister’s son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, will hold a meeting with office secretaries of upazila units after Eid and will give instructions to prepare the party database,” said AL joint general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif yesterday (Tuesday).

He also said they also directed the leaders of the party’s central sub-committees to collect information about the grassroots-level leaders and submit it to the office, which will help to prepare the database.

The party will collect all the data of the grassroots-level leaders, including ward-level leaders, across the country to increase organisational capacity so that additional benefits can be had during local body polls as well as general elections.

The party will do the work of database in three phases. In the first phase, the party will collect names of leaders of districts and upazila units of the Awami League from across the country. All union and ward-level leaders of the AL will be under a database after the second phase, and in the third phase all information of the database will be kept up to date, party insiders said.

The AL deputy office secretary,  Biplab Barua, said they have already directed the party’s district unit leaders to send information about the grassroots-level leaders to the centre to help prepare the database. It will enhance relations between central and grassroots-level leaders.

“We will complete the task in three phases. We have already got most of our district leaders’ information. I hope the first phase of collecting data about district and upazila level leaders will be completed by June,” he said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, at a joint meeting at the party headquarters last month, directed her central leaders to work for strengthening the organisation from the central to the grassroots-level.

The database will be an effective use of the social media for enlisting more members of the party across the country and for evidence-based research like public opinion polls and focus group discussions to design national and local-level campaigns.

Earlier, the party had started to prepare the database of party leaders of all units across the country, but the effort somehow stopped. In the first step, the party high-ups started to prepare database of leaders of two divisions, Rangpur and Rajshahi, but it was not completed.

A central leader of the party said: “It is difficult to transmit party directives by post, but it is easy and fast through email. Sometimes the letter carrying confidential party directives do not reach the right person or even gets lost. Besides, it will connect digitally all the grassroots-level leaders with the party high command directly, if we bring them under internet connectivity.”

The party’s science and technology affairs secretary, Abdus Sobur, said though it is a tough job to prepare a database of leaders of all party units, it will help to increase organisational capacity of the party.
