OIC to take Rohingya issue to int’l court

Diplomatic Correspondent, Dhaka
OIC to take Rohingya issue to int’l court

The Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) will adopt a resolution over the Rohingya crisis to take the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) by filing a case with the court to ensure the legal rights for the Rohingyas. “A ministerial-level ad hoc meeting on the Rohingya crisis, led by Gambia, is going to be held on the sidelines of the 14th OIC summit.

A resolution will be adopted at the meeting. The process of filing a case with the ICJ will be expedited through the resolution,” foreign minister AK Abdul Momen said yesterday.

The minister said this at a press briefing at the foreign ministry on the eve of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit to Japan and then to KSA  to attend the OIC summit on May 31. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the only woman leader to attend the OIC summit in Mecca. A total of 148 high-powered delegations will be present on the occasion.

Momen said he wouldn’t go to Japan with the Prime Minister as he would attend the foreign ministry-level meeting with other leaders on May 29.

“If the ICJ delivers any verdict on the Rohingya crisis, it will help address the crisis,” Momen said.

The minister has said the OIC summit is very important this time as several Muslim countries are facing threats that are destabilising peace, security and regional integrity of these countries. Besides, Muslim countries are riddled with internal conflicts, interference of others into Muslim countries, tensions, terrorism, militancy, Islamophobia and human disaster.

Taking all this into consideration, the summit will sort out solutions to these problems, the minister said.  The summit will also discuss the Muslim minority problems in non-Muslim countries and Rohingya crisis, he said. It will also shed light on the tensions in the Middle East and the just demands and rights of Palestinians over Palestine and Al-Quds.

The minister said the OIC summit was scheduled to be held in the African country, Gambia, but the country later proposed that the 45th summit would be held in Saudi Arabia.

After attending the summit, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would perform Omrah and from there she would fly to Finland, where she would hold bilateral talks with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, the minister said. The Prime Minister will return on June 8.

State minister for foreign affairs Md. Shahriar Alam and foreign secretary Shahidul Haque, among others, were present at the press briefing.
