Bangladesh in next stage after 0-0 draw against Laos

Bangladesh moved into the next stage of the World Cup 2022 and Asian Cup Qualifying round after finishing their home match on a goalless draw against Laos yesterday. Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, the Bangladesh team, despite demonstrating a better game throughout the 90 minutes time, failed to put a shot on the target from at least three open-net chances and was forced to end in a goalless draw.

Bangladesh, who needed a draw in the home ground after having 1-0 win at away ground in Vientiane, Laos did the job well, though they had every opportunity to win the match.

Lacklustre attempts from the forwards, however, failed to bring a win for the team. Bangladesh won two successive corners inside 10 minutes in the slow starter match but could not produce any threat when there was a close call with Mamunul free kick. Rabiul Hassan, being unmarked some two metres to the post, failed to connect.

Laos, surviving from the scare, created some pressure and earned two consecutive corners.

Hosts made good counter with a sharp move through the midway but a feeble shot from Rabiul went straight to the goalkeeper on the 17th minute.

Bangladesh team could have emerged as early leaders, but the chance was missed after a fine attacking display but Jibon failed to capitalise the golden opportunity despite getting the ball possession when Laos goalkeeper Xayavath left the post open.

Bangladesh had another chance for taking lead 10 minutes before the break with a stunning close range strike from Biplob Ahmed on Rabiul throw-in inside goal-mouth melee. But the shot closely missed the side-post.

Bangladesh, winners in the away match, looked a bit disorganized on the home ground most the of the first half when they failed to mark the targets from the chances that appeared.

After the goalless opening 45 minutes, having another chance early after the break Jibon disappointed again when he failed to head home a right side cross of substitute Ibrahim, as the unmarked forward’s weak dropping header was comfortably gripped by the goalkeeper on the 54th minute.

The visitors had only a half chance just after the beginning of the second half when Vannasone’s close-range shot was brilliantly gripped by goalkeeper Ashraf Rana.

Another good scoring chance came to Bangladesh way on the 78th minute and this time Shufil looked shaky when he failed to give a touch to the ball that came from Jibon’s left side cross.

Ibrahim wasted the easiest chance of the match when, after rushing well inside the area, failed to hit the target with a header on a Jibon cross, as his header went out the side post missing the net wide open in front of him.

Despite failing to win the match, by virtue of winning the away match Bangladesh confirmed the next round of the World Cup 2022 qualifying competitions where 40 teams will play splitting into five groups.

Bangladesh coach Jamie Day agreed that though his boys’ performance was not up to the mark, he was happy to fulfil the target of moving to the next round.

“We dominated the better possessions though forwards failed to utilise the chances that came to their way. But the big thing is we qualified for the next round, which was our aim,” said Jamie in his post-match reaction.

Bangladesh Team: Ashraful Islam Rana, Rahmat Meah, Yeasin Khan, Tutul Hossain Badsha, Jamal Bhuiyan, Mamunul Islam, Nabib Newaz Jibon, Bishwanatch Ghosh, Masuk Meah Joni (Shufil), Biplo Ahmed (Ibrahim) and Rabiul Hassan (Sohel Rana).
