Award to boost pvt sector industries from next year

For the first time, the government is going to introduce an award titled “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Puraskar (Industry Award)” to boost the private sector industries. The industries ministry will give the award from next year to industrialists and businessmen under seven categories like small, middle, big and high-tech entrepreneurs every December, according to sources concerned.

The ministry has sent a draft policy for the proposed award to the Cabinet Division, which will place it at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee for approval, the sources added.

Talking to The Independent, a senior official of the industries ministry said the government wanted to introduce the proposed award in 2020 coinciding with the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman which will the country will observe as Mujib Year.

According to the ministry proposal, in 1957, Bangabandhu as the minister for industries, commerce and labour in then Jukta Front government had introduced a bill for East Pakistan Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (EPSCIC) in Parliament.

The bill to boost small-scale industries was executed on May 30, 1957.

After independence, EPSCIC was renamed as the Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) and led to enhanced industrialisation in the country.

“The initiative taken by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had led to the establishment of various industries in the private sector, strengthening the country’s economy. And that’s why the ministry has decided to introduce the new award,” the proposal said.

Each awardee will receive a gold medal, a replica of the award, a certificate of honour and a cash prize.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was born on March 17, 1920. He became a leading figure in the Awami League (AL) and eventually the leader of the party, which was founded in 1949 as an East Pakistan-based political party. Sheikh Mujib is credited as Jatir Janak or Jatir Pita (Father of the Nation) of the country for his efforts to gain political autonomy for the erstwhile East Pakistan and to achieve the country’s independence through the Liberation War in 1971.

He served as the first President of Bangladesh and later as the country’s Prime Minister from April 17, 1971 till his assassination on August 15, 1975.

His daughter Sheikh Hasina is the current leader of the AL and also the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
