A 55-year-old man has been planting fruit-bearing trees and sowing seeds of various vegetables for nearly 10 years, immensely benefitting his fellow villagers at Bakdokora Jotdarpara in Saidpur upazila of Nilphamari district. Meet Haydar Ali, the muezzin at a local mosque, who spends half of his paltry income to carry on this plantation drive.

According to villagers, Haydar has planted around 1,000 trees and cultivates vegetables on both sides of a two-km-long canal flowing across the village.

The villagers freely pluck fruits from the trees and many people also take rest under their shade during summer. “About 60 to 65 per cent of trees planted by Haydar along the canal are fruit-bearing. He does not stop us from eating the fruits,” a villager, Soyel Rana, said.

On his part, Haydar said he found immense satisfaction that he could be of some help to his fellow villagers. “When people take rest under the trees, eat their fruits and take the vegetables home, I get such happiness that I shall not be able to make you understand,” he added.

“I have been planting trees for a long time and I shall continue to do so throughout my life,” he said. This nature lover is optimistic that others will come forward to help in his noble cause. “If I continue my work, more people will come forward today or tomorrow to assist me and then the entire village will be full of trees,” he said.
