Power poles pose peril on highway

Power poles pose peril on highway

Thousands of people are using the Chuadanga-Dhaka highway due to the position of 32 electric poles, some of them on the road itself and some just by the road. Fatal accidents may take place at any time, say, drivers and concerned people.

People have been blaming the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL) authorities for not removing the poles in two years. But the WZPDCL authorities said they had submitted proposals in this regard to the roads and highways department a long time ago.

Pedestrians and drivers said they were crossing the bend between Uttar Narayanpur and Dakbangla Hall Bazer with tremendous risk every day. Two trucks of Jamuna Oil Company were involved in an accident near the poles near Islami Bank at Trimohini of Dakbangla Bazer on May 13.

Locals said the road between Meherpur and Dhaka was constructed for smooth road communication by British rulers. The road has been playing a vital role in establishing communication with other parts of the country. But the electric pole has become a serious nuisance, they added.

Shariful Islam, a driver of Chuadanga Deluxe, said they had been crossing the risky area at Dakbangla at mortal risk. WZPDCL sub-divisional engineer Anupam Chakravarty admitted the existence of the electric poles on the road and roadsides at Dakbangla in Jhenidah Sadar.

He said they had already submitted proposals to remove and reinstall the poles to the roads and highways department last year. Roads and highways department executive engineer Nazrul Islam said they did not receive any letter from the WZPDCL authorities this year in this regard.
