In 1949 China was fully liberated from Kuomintang rule except Formosa and Hong Kong with some tributaries. Its leader at that time was President Chiang Kai-shek.
Once Chiang Kai-shek was a national hero with Sun yat-sen, the great hero of China before Mao Zedong. Chiang Kai-shek was involved in war with Japan for more than one decade and gradually lost his independent role in Chinese politics and became a protégé of first the British Raj and then post war American imperialism. China was liberated from Anglo American dominance. The Red army under Mao Zedong established Red China and Chiang Kai-shek fled to Formosa and formed his government known as Nationalist China and kept declaring from time to time that he would recapture the mainland soon. Formosa soon became a military base for American soldiers and Chiang Kai-shek lived there until his death under the protection of American military.
Chiang lived a long life. He had neither power nor public support to invade mainland China. But every year he announced that it was the last year for communist China as he is going recapture the mainland. It became a rhetoric to say this thing twice or thrice a year and before his death he became a laughing stock even among his own Chinese people. Recently a fallen and forgotten hero of Bangladesh politics started behaving like the late Chiang Kai-shek. Chiang Kai-shek had a glorious past as an ally of the great leader Sun yat-sen. After Sun yat-sen's death though he became the leader of Kuomintang party, but eventually became subservient to American interest in the Far East and lost his credibility forever.
Like him Dr. Kamal Hossain also was a trustworthy companion of the founding father of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujib. After his death Dr. Kamal started drifting away from Sheikh Mujib's party and his ideals. Gradually he established a liberal democratic party- Gono Forum but ended up joining a far right conservative front, which was deadly against the ideals of the war of independence. He tried to come back to main stream politics or power but every time he was rejected by the people. After the defeat of his conservative front in the last election he has gone back to political obscurity. Perhaps to show that he is still alive politically his only rhetoric now is to threat Awami League, accuse its government for corruption and undemocratic practices and to threat the government that he will oust them by public support. Recently he said that a successful movement will be carried out by this December and Hasina government will go.
This announcement has created much amusement among people rather than any curiosity. Dr. Kamal has hardly any control over his own party. His two MPs elected in the last election did not bother to follow his directives. The unity front which was formed under his leadership before the general election is now in a tattered condition. Many senior leaders of the front including Barrister Moudud Ahmed have expressed their amusement at Dr. Kamal's declaration.
When unity front could not preserve its own unity Dr. Kamal is day dreaming that he will go for expansion of his front. This is making people more amused.
People know that Dr. Kamal is not a mass leader, his politics is ' drawing room' politics and his connection with Europe and America in the past was strong like Chiang Kai-shek. This has also proved to be a myth at the present time. The way American President Richard Nixon virtually abandoned Formosa to make main China their trade partner, almost similarly the civil society in Bangladesh was ignored if not abandoned in the last three general elections under the leadership of Dr. Kamal Hossain. Chiang Kai-shek in his last days was hoping to defeat the communist China with the help of America which turned to be an illusion. Similarly, our so-called civil society lived long in the land of a day dream that the western interests will come and help them grab power. The 'half winner' of the Nobel prize Dr. Yunus hoped that with the help of his personal friend Hillary Clinton the-then state secretary of America, he will oust Hasina government from power but that too proved to be a fiasco.
Now the new threat from Dr. Kamal Hossain may prove the old saying 'an empty vessel sounds much'. Hasina government in Bangladesh is stable now. The December general election has been accepted by the whole world without any reservation.
The last hope of the so-called civil society that the second Modi government would change its mind in their favour was proved wrong. It is evident that Dr. Kamal Hossain and his BNP-Jamaat associates are not strong enough to launch a movement against the present government. Whatever the reason people are not behind them. By the present threat that they would overthrow the government by next December they once again proved that they are still living in the cloud cuckoo land.
